    What we've been up to

Over the last few months we collected your comments on the initial concept design for the area. The design seeks to create a public realm and improve the infrastructure to provide different modes of transport for people to access local facilities and amenities.

  • Improving the public realm by enhancing the pavements and adding more greenery;
  • Prioritising people over vehicles to make it easier for people on foot, bike or wheels to travel through the area and safely cross roads;
  • Reducing traffic speed and volume to make it a place where people what to spend time in safely; and
  • Improve connectivity from Battlefield to other parts of the city by improving bus services and connecting existing cycle paths.
  • Throughout this consultation period we engaged with 2,800 people through events, meetings and our project website. 2,195 people visited the website and we received 876 completed surveys and comments. This feedback following the last nine months of engagement has helped refine the concept design which will be showcased at our upcoming public event on the 23rd July.

During the public consultation of nearly a month we engaged with a total number of 2,637 people and received valuable feedback on the design ideas. This included the following events and activities:

Public Drop-in Session in the community

We held a public session to launch the public consultation on the 19 March at Langside Library and held a stall on the street. We showcased the design ideas, discussed the changes and gathered feedback. 302 people attended over the course of the day.

    Website Launch

We uploaded the designs onto our website on the 19 March for people to leave their comments and feedback. Since its launch we've had:

2,240 visitors to the site 1,167 comments about the design ideas

    Engagement with local businesses

We invited local business owners and workers on Battlefield Road to view the design ideas and leave their feedback and comments. 16 business owners attended and we collected 11 feedback forms for the consultation.

Activities and events with the Youth

We returned to Battlefield Primary School to discuss the design changes and encourage discussions to gather feedback from the pupils. Over the course of a day we ran workshops with 4 different classes, totaling 95 pupils .

    What’s Next?

The team are now analysing all the feedback received and will be refining the designs where possible. Our next public event for the project will be held in the next couple of months displaying the feedback received on the initial designs, the refined concept design and outlining next steps with Glasgow City Council. What did Battlefield Primary School think about the Design Ideas?

Our visit to Battlefield Primary School

On 21st March 2019, our team visited Battlefield Primary School to speak to young people about the proposed designs for Battlefield Road and Battlefield Rest. During the day we organised four workshops for students from P5-P7 to view, discuss and shape the design proposals . During the workshops, we used visualisations to show the current design of the streets and proposed changes. The class were then asked to discuss the following questions:

How do you feel about the designs?

"The design looks nice for people at Battlefield Rest. Good meeting points for people waiting rather than meeting on the road. Could mean more people bike to school and make the journey faster. We like the cycle ways."

"Good for running in the green space, safer for teenagers walking and looking at their phones, more protected, feels safer and clearer around the buses.’"

How will the designs impact you moving around the area?

They also discussed how the proposed changes would impact them and other people moving around Battlefield. They wondered about the interaction between pedestrians and cyclists and shared ideas on how the new public space could be developed:

"Keep two way traffic up to the library, otherwise, I can't get home from school easily."

"Make the green space more fun, add swings and sand area, and more trees, park benches and play area. Move the Glasgow bikes from across the road, because it's nicer.’‘

"Add a piano for anyone to play on the pavement or in the park and a guitar that has a security wire attached like in a mobile phone shop that anyone can play. Add Fast food stalls and café seating. Use the space for events and put tents and stalls in it."

It is essential to include young people in the development of the space they use and travel through. The workshops created an open platform for young people to share their views and needs. Feedback they provided will help us to understand what is important to young people in the urban environment and how this could be reflected in the proposed designs. We were very impressed with their feedback and ideas and it is great to see their passion for the neighbourhood and willingness to make it more attractive for spending time in and get more people cycling.

    Thank you for having us!

Public Consultation – Feedback closes next Friday 12th April

The design ideas for Battlefield Road and Battlefield Junction are still live and available for your feedback. Until Friday 12 April you can:

  • View the designs online and leave your comments by visiting: https://battlefieldproposals.commonplace.is/overview
  • View hard copy of the designs and fill out a feedback form at either Langside Library or Langside Parish Church
  • Thank you for everyone who has commented on the designs so far. Please share this link with anyone you know who lives, works or travels through the area. Link to the Design Ideas .

Activities to help you travel actively this month

Throughout the project, we’ve been working with the community to understand the issues around active travel across the Battlefield project area and to identify solutions to make it easier and more attractive for people to travel by foot, bike or wheelchair. Our findings will be presented to you during the drop-in event on the 19 March at 3pm – 8pm at Langside Library along with the first stage concept designs created from the engagement so far.

In the meantime we’d like to share what’s on this month to help you walk, cycle or wheel for your everyday journeys.

Re-imagine your commute with Sustrans’ Scottish Workplace Journey Challenge

Sustrans has got fantastic prizes to give away if you leave the car behind for your travel to, from and for work during March . Put the fun back into your work journeys as you challenge colleagues and other workplaces to travel sustainably and compete to climb the leader board - every journey counts!

Big Pedal - the UK's largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools

We're inviting families and schools to join the Sustrans' Big Pedal challenge, the largest inter-school cycling, walking and scooting competition in the UK.

Big Pedal is a free annual competition that encourages children, parents and staff to travel to school using human power in order to win prizes and have fun.

This year’s theme is ‘Travelling around the body’ with pupils tracking their progress on a wall chart, learning about the human body and how active travel benefits their health as they go.

Big Pedal 2019 is open to individual classes as well as whole schools. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking, scooting or using a wheelchair to school.

This year’s challenge will run from 25 March to 5 April . For schools unable to take part in the main challenge there is also a one-day version.

We’re inviting parents and teachers to join the Big Pedal and register your school through the Big Pedal website: https://bigpedal.org.uk/

Calling female cyclists - become a Breeze Champion

Did you know that in Scotland twice as many men as women cycle once or twice a week for transport? Together with British Cycling HSBC UK, we’re calling female cyclists to join the Breeze Champions team and inspire more women to get fit, have fun and ride bikes.

If you’re a confident female cyclist and want to encourage other women and girls to cycle join The Breeze Ride Leader course delivered in Glasgow on 30th March and 22nd June 2019. The number of spaces are limited so don’t wait to sign-up.

By completing the course you will become a Breeze Champion and an ambassador for the programme, raising awareness to help get more women and girls on bikes. You will also develop strong leadership skills and make new friends whilst improving your own health and fitness too. The course will qualify you to deliver guided bike rides for groups of female adults of all levels of experience and ability.

The course is one day, free to attend and in return you will be asked to lead 8 rides per year. For more information and to sign up for a place visit: www.letsride.co.uk/beachampion

    Kattalin, a Breeze Champion said:

I became a Breeze Champion back in 2013, after I came back from a cycling adventure. I thought that joining the Breeze programme would allow me to help and inspire other women to cycle, and get a recognised national qualification.

6 years on, the benefits of being part of Breeze have completely exceeded my expectations. Breeze has helped me integrate and feel part of the community where I live (East End of Glasgow) and I have also met some very inspiring people that I would not have otherwise met.

If you are passionate about cycling and you would like to help other women enjoy the benefits getting out on a bike, this course is for you!

There is also a guided ride leader course open to both men and women, in Glasgow on 16th March. To sign up visit: www.letsride.co.uk/beachampion

Residents Keep Active in Battlefield: Bike Powered Cinema and Walking Audit

Over the last few weeks the Battlefield Street Design team have been running events with the community and attending meetings to find out more about the area and how we move around. All of these comments and ideas feed into the designs which will be showcased for feedback at our next public event.

Bike Powered Cinema at Battlefield Primary School

On the 24th January the Street Design team were invited to Battlefield Primary School to introduce the pupils to the Sustrans’ Bike Powered Cinema . Throughout the day we held sessions with 5 different classes at the school and talked about the benefits of cycling, the reasons behind why we cycle and we watched some short clips to hear stories from different bike users across the country. But what made this day quite different is that no electricity was used. The children used their own energy and took it in turns to power the Sustrans projector by pedaling fast on three bikes all connected to the cinema. Take a look at some of the photos below:

We had a great time at the school and we received excellent feedback from all of the students and teachers involved.

    Walking Audit of Battlefield

Last week we continued the active theme and teamed up with the Queen’s Park weekly Health Walk and conducted a walking audit across the project area in Battlefield with the local community. We collected comments from the group about the use of the space for active travel and how it makes us feel when walking around.

Participants raised important points during the audit about the safety of crossing roads and the need for recognised and formal crossings at specific locations. Concerns were raised about the quality of pavements in the area and the narrow width which makes it difficult to accommodate a wheelchair and a buggy at the same time. Furthermore, the lack of dropped kerbs make it difficult for wheelchair users to cross safely. However, a huge asset to the area is the Queens Park, its greenery and number of walking routes makes it a regular location for the walking group.

Thank you to Good Move Glasgow and the regular walkers which let us join their weekly health walk to carry out this activity. All of these comments were recorded by the team and will help inform the design process for Battlefield Street Design Project.

    Weekly Walking Group

If you’d like to join this weekly walking group the Queens Park Health Walk runs every Monday and meet at the main foyer at New Victoria Hospital at 11.00am. It’s a great way to take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle and meet new people. There are a number of Health Walks right across the city which are suitable for all ages and abilities. To find out more visit: www.goodmoveglasgow.com/walking .

The next stage for the Battlefield Street Design project is the design consultation period where we will be showcasing designs of the space and collecting your feedback. Active Travel: Thoughts from the Younger Generation

Last week, we visited Shawlands Academy in Glasgow and talked to a group of Young Ambassadors about their views on walking and cycling. It’s important for us to understand how young people feel about active travel and what their needs and barriers are when working on walking and cycling initiatives.

During the session, we asked the students how they travel to school and if they feel safe on their way to school.

How do you travel to school?

The majority of participants walk to school with two participants getting a lift from a parent or taking the bus. Cycling to school wasn’t popular among the group. However, half of the participants said they cycle for other activities such as leisure or training, and understood the benefits of cycling and walking.

‘I don’t cycle to school, but when I go for training, it’s easier and I am not dependent on my parents’

The students feel safe on their way to school and listed a number of reasons why; there are lots of people on the way, don’t see any threats, there is a controlled crossing, and there is a lollipop person near the school.

One of the students mentioned: It depends on the area, you need to be careful when walking. I wouldn’t find it so safe when walking in the darkness on my own.’

    What stops people from cycling?

Next, we discussed various modes of travel in Glasgow and how the students felt about them. The group was very positive about active travel, they appreciated the benefits of cycling and walking and highlighted the need for dedicated cycling infrastructure. They shared what active travel means for them, and what barriers they see to cycling:

‘People don’t like it when young people cycle on pavements they stop us from cycling.‘

One of the students was proud to tell us about a cycling trip he did to the Scottish Borders with his friend following the National Cycling Network, ‘It was a great challenge and as we followed the NCN we knew where to go’

Being judged by peers has been recognised as a significant barrier to cycling for young people. They indicated that to feel comfortable to cycle, everybody would have to cycle, so it feels like the social norm.

‘Promotion and cycling of training must be done in a way that is fun.’

‘People should understand the benefits of cycling and walking.’

Participants also mentioned that it’s important to work with young children and encourage them to cycle from an early age, so they can continue their behaviour across different schools. Involving their parents in this is also very important.

We enjoyed the session with the young people and their feedback will contribute to our ideas and initiatives to encourage cycling and walking in the Battlefield area.

    What's coming up?

Join us next Monday 28th for a walking audit of the project area. Meet us at 11am in the foyer of the New Victoria Hospital and take a walk (approx 1 hour) around Battlefield finishing with a hot drink at Finn's Place.

The next public session for the Battlefield Street Design project will be held Tuesday 19 March at Langside Library in Battlefield. This is stage 3 of the project and it will be an opportunity for you to feedback on a collection of designs for the area.

Upcoming Event: Battlefield Walking Audit 28 Jan

What better way to start the year than a walk in the fresh air! Join us for a walking audit of Battlefield on Monday 28th January. We will walk around Battlefield and learn from you on how to make the area more accessible, safer and attractive for moving around, no matter what age or ability.

Meet us at 11:00 am at the main foyer at New Victoria Hospital . We will have two different routes, one for faster walkers and one for more steady walkers, finishing with a hot drink and a chat at Finn’s Place (Langside Parish Church, 167 Ledard Rd, Glasgow G42 9QU).

A walking audit enables the local community to look at their local area to assess conditions and suitability for active travel and social interactions. The feedback collected from this event will help inform the design process with ideas/solutions along with the information collected so far.

    Weekly Heath Walks

Our walking audit will be conducted as part of the Queens Park Health Walk , free and open to everyone. If you can’t join us on the 28th, your local Queens Park Health Walk runs every Monday and starts at the main foyer at New Victoria Hospital at 11.00am. Have your say on Glasgow Secure On-street Cycle Parking

Did you know that Glasgow City Council is currently performing a feasibility study on the introduction of secure covered cycle parking for residents of Glasgow?

Throughout the engagement within our project, we learnt that lack of secure bike storage is a concern for some of the Battlefield residents already cycling, as well as a barrier to start cycling.

We encourage you to take part in the Secure Cycle Parking Consultation and provide your feedback on the needs for secure bike storage in Battlefield. The questionnaire is open until 17th December , and you can access it through this link: https://arcg.is/05LK5m

Putting Ideas into Designs: Battlefield Design Workshops Thursday 15 November

Thank you to everyone who attended the Design Workshops last Thursday for the second stage of the Battlefield community-led Street Design project.

We had a great turnout of 109 people who attended the event and viewed the feedback and comments that we’ve collected so far, took part in discussions around cycling and turned ideas into designs through discussions and practical workshops.

A big thanks to Bike for Good for delivering the Dr Bike session at the event and running health checks and mini repairs for everyone’s bikes.

    Event Details

The event was held at Langside Parish Church last Thursday with a drop-in session from 3pm until 8pm where everyone could view the feedback and comments from the community about the area and how they can be turned into designs. If you didn’t get a chance to read our display boards you can read them here - link to display boards .

During the event we held a series of design workshops for people to take the opportunity to discuss ideas for redesigning the street in a 3D scale by using miniature models and maps of the area.

Later on we held a workshop about travelling in the area to discuss people’s experiences and views of cycling in Battlefield and what can be improved to encourage more people to travel by bike.

    Next steps for the project

This session forms a major part of our information collection. With the comments and ideas from this event and with the background data, material and facts gathered in the discover stage we will be looking to commence forming the outline design for the area.

    Upcoming events

Over the winter and early spring we will continue to work with the design working group, the steering group, Glasgow City Council and SPT to create proposals. These proposals will be open to your comments in March where we will hold another drop-in event and over a period of time the designs will be displayed in multiple venues and through the Commonplace website.

In the meantime watch this space for more local events in your area including led bike rides, local walks, film screenings and more. Keep checking this site for details of upcoming events or contact emily.gait@sustrans.org.uk for more information.
